President Rodrigo Duterte is confident that his long time aide, Christopher “Bong” Go, will win if he throws his hat into the 2019 senatorial race.
In a speech before the Filipino community in Hong Kong Thursday (April 12, Duterte said he saw Go’s alleged involvement in the multibillion-peso Navy frigate deal controversy as his “ticket” to becoming a senator.
“Once you harass a person and that person is really very good in the eyes of the public perception, ginagawa mo lang hero eh. Kita… Without campaigning, naging senador na tuloy,” he said. “Bong Go na, tawag sa kanya senador na.”
Duterte said Go, who holds the position of Special Assistant to the President, now has a lot of fans who he does not even know personally.
“Eh kung boboto pa ‘yung taga-Hong Kong, ah sigurado. Eh Chinese to eh,” he said.
Go has been coy about his political plans, saying he prefers to focus on his work for now. However, he is also becoming increasingly visible in the public eye, attending events and leading meetings as Duterte’s proxy.
