Associate Justice Teresita De Castro is the newly appointed Supreme Court chief justice, replacing ousted Maria Lourdes Sereno.
Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra confirmed the appointment, saying the 69-year old De Castro, who is set to retire in October, was President Rodrigo Duterte’s top choice.
De Castro was among the shortlisted candidates submitted by the Judicial and Bar Council for the chief justice post. The two other nominees were associate justices Diosdado Peralta and Lucas Bersamin.
Guevarra added that the formal appointment for the new Supreme Court chief justice, who will have a two-month term, will be released by Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea on Tuesday.
De Castro was among the eight justice who voted to oust Sereno via a quo warranto petition. Following the announcement, Presidential Spokesperson
Harry Roque said De Castro is the best choice. “Bravo! Best choice for CJ! Proven competence, known nationalist and a streak of being a judicial activist!” he said.
