Ejercito defends ‘Santo Rodrigo’
Administration Senator JV Ejercito laughed off President Rodrigo Duterte’s latest remarks attacking the Catholic faith, saying he was not being serious.
Reacting to Duterte’s comments calling Catholic saints “stupid” and asking Filipinos to worship “Santo Rodrigo” instead, Ejercito said the public should not take the President seriously.
“Siguro by now, kilala na natin ang Pangulo. Kung minsan ang kanyang remarks ay whether it is jokes or whatever. Nakita naman natin na ilang beses nyang sinabi na sya po ay galing sa Katoliko at may respeto,” the senator said in an interview on DWIZ radio.
Duterte made the remarks on Thursday at a briefing on the effects of Typhoon Rosita. The country observed All Saints Day and All Souls Day on Thursday and Friday, with millions flocking to cemeteries to honor their dead.
“Minsan siguro nangingibabaw ang inis, nagkakainisan minsan pero he is not that serious in that remark,” Ejercito added.
He said Duterte was just joking when he referred to himself as “Santo Rodrigo.”
“Mga ano na lang ng Pangulo yun. Nagpapatawa lang, I don’t think he is really serious with those remarks,” he said.
But Ejercito added that Duterte should refrain from making comments that might be considered disrespectful.
“Kung pwede lang kasi tayo ay predominantly Catholic country,” he said.
