Following the recent brawl between Gilas Pilipinas and Boomers Australia, netizens have been sharing their mixed opinions all over social media.
However, it seems like there is one good thing that came out of the now-infamous “basketbrawl” — a good Samaritan act performed by none other than Gilas player Troy Rike.
Instead of joining the melee, Troy Rike protected Chris Goulding, a Boomers player, and shielded him from getting beaten up by the other Gilas players
In light of what he did, Troy Rike was awarded PHP 100,000 by his team’s backer, Bounty Agro Ventures Inc. presdient Ronald Mascariñas.
“Kung hindi sa action ni Troy Rike, basag ‘yung ulo nung nakahiga na ‘yun. By protecting this person, nakita niya ‘yung repercussion[s]. Even with his youth, he saw things beyond that moment.”
“I’m planning to split it and give PHP 50,000 to a Filipino charity and PHP 50,000 to an Australian charity as well.”
Touched by this gesture, Mascariñas and Chooks-to-Go decided to give another PHP 100,000 to the two charities Rike donated to.
Mascariñas commended the 22-year-old Gilas player for what he did, saying he can be an “excellent ambassador to the sport both on and off the court” despite being so young.
