TWO young Ilonggo booters led Dreaming Futbol United (DFU) of the Philippines in capturing the 2018 Borneo Football Cup Under 12 championship title after a slim 1-0 win over Indonesia in the finals at UMS Stadium, Malaysia last Sept. 26.
Kirk Ryan Sumbang and Kurt Kevin Sollorin of Iloilo helped the national team reach the finals and cop the crown by obliterating their opponents in the early stages of the games.
The team blasted Malaysia, 3-0, before forcing a 1-1 draw with Australia. They also thrashed SK Malawa-Kota Kinabalu, 4-0; MMT Junior-Malaysia, 3-0; and Indonesia, 1-1.
Sumbang is from PAREF-Westbridge while Sollorin is a student of Assumption Iloilo.
According to Sollorin’s mother, Electa Joy, who personally accompanied her child in Malaysia, the team played very well.
“Teamwork! They played it hard with heart and never gave up. The headline news before the game predicted that MMT Junior Malaysia will beat the defending champion, DFU, but we nailed it despite Malaysian’s cheering squad,” she added.
JP Voltes of the Philippines also won their match against Tab Menggatal, 2-0 to land on the fifth spot.
Claret School, also from the Philippines, thrashed Burnsmark United, 6-1, to claim seventh place.
