Nasungkit ng Pilipinas ang tatlong silver medals at tatlo ring bronze medals sa 58th International Mathematical Olympiad na ginanap nitong Hulyo 13 hanggang Hulyo 23 sa Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Ito rin ang unang pagkakataon na nagwagi ng medalya ang lahat ng anim na pambato ng Pilipinas sa isa sa pinakamalalaking international na kompetisyon sa math.

Lumaban sa higit 600 contestants at nakasungkit ng medalya sina:

– Kyle Patrick Dulay ng Philippine Science High School (Main) – Silver Medal
– Albert John Patupat ng De La Salle University Integrated School – Silver Medal
– Farrell Eldrian Wu ng MGC New Life Christian Academy – Silver Medal
– Shaquille Wyan Que ng Grace Christian College – Bronze Medal
– Sean Anderson Ty ng Zamboanga Chong Hua High School – Bronze Medal
– Clyde Wesley Ang ng Chiang Kai Shek College – Bronze Medal

Nanatili rin ang Pilipinas sa ika-17 puwesto sa 111 bansa na kasali sa kompetisyon bagaman hindi nakakuha ng gintong medalya tulad noong nakaraang taon.

Pinangungunahan nina Richard Eden, Team Leader at Louie John Vallejo, Deputy Team Leader ang Philippine team.

Bukod kay Eden at Vallejo, sinanay din ang Philippine team nina Carlo Francisco Adajar, Christian Chan Shio, Mr. Gari Lincoln Chua, Ms. Camille Tyrene Dee, Jerome Dimabayao, Russelle Guadalupe, Job Nable, Diane Christine Pelejo, Timothy Robin Teng, at Mikaela Angelina Uy.

Ang International Mathematical Olympiad ay isa sa mga prestihiyoso at mahirap na high school mathematics competitions sa buong mundo.
