As she faced what is perhaps the toughest challenge in her career, the country's highest magistrate has chosen a veteran lawyer from the San Beda College of Law to speak on her behalf.

Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno has tapped lawyer Carlo Cruz as her spokesperson in the impeachment proceedings she is facing at the House of Representatives.

Cruz, son of the late Supreme Court Associate Justice Isagani Cruz, has been a member of the Philippine Bar since 1983. He graduated cum laude in 1982 from the San Beda College of Law, also President Rodrigo Duterte's alma mater.

Deemed an expert in constitutional and administrative law, Cruz has authored several law books, including the Philippine Administrative Law, the Law of Public Officers, and Volumes I and II of the Notes on the Constitution.

This makes him “an expert on the conduct allowed from and required of public officials in government,” the very question Sereno is now facing at the House.

Cruz also co-authored the Philippine Political Law (2014 Edition) and Constitutional Law (2015 Edition).

The veteral lawyer has also built a career in the academe, having taught Political Law, Constitutional Law, and Administrative Law and the Law of Public Officers at different law schools in the country, namely his alma mater San Beda, the University of Santo Tomas Faculty of Civil Law, and the University of the Philippines College of Law.

He was also a bar review lecturer and a Mandatory Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) lecturer at several review centers and law schools.

Early in his career, Cruz served as an associate in the Belo Ermitano Abiera law firm from 1983 to 1986, and a partner in Belo Abiera & Associates from 1987 to 1993.

He was also a founding partner at the law firm of Cruz Cruz & Navarro III, where he served as managing partner from 1993 to 1998, and then from 2007 to 2012.

He has been collaborating counsel to Cruz Law Office since 2012.
