PHP250 million was the estimated savings of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) for the procurement of the paper rolls to be used as official ballots in the forthcoming Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) polls.
According to Comelec–Printing Committee head Genevieve Guevarra, the savings came from 1,500 paper rolls they found after conducting an inventory of the paper used in the May 2016 national and local polls.
“Since we have extra papers from the May elections, we will just be using them so we will not need to purchase new ones. We were able to save approximately PHP250 million,” she explained.
Guevarra said they will only need about 600 to 800 paper rolls for the 85 million ballots for the voters in the village and youth polls that is set to be held on Oct. 31.
On the other hand, Comelec Chairman Juan Andres Bautista said that they are also able to save more after the National Printing Office (NPO) agreed to lower further the price of printing the official ballots.
“The first quote of the NPO in printing the ballots was PHP3.50 per ballot. After negotiations, they were very kind to give it at PHP3.00 per ballot,” he said.
On Sunday, the poll body started the printing of the ballots at the NPO in Quezon City.
