Happy to be home

Aga Muhlach

Aga Muhlach

He may have been gone for six long years but for Aga Muhlach, it’s like he never left ABS-CBN at all.

Still looking youthful at 47, the veteran actor signed a contract with the network giant recently, saying, “Pagdating ko kanina, it’s normal. Parang I never left home. I see familiar faces.”

Aga was with ABS-CBN for 19 years before he took off to work for a rival station.

“I did work there for three years pero I stopped. So, you should understand medyo nerve-wracking ito, kaharap ko kayo at may hawak na mikropono,” he shared.

“Parang first time uli sa akin ang lahat,” he added. “First day ako makunan ng pictures, first day ako mainterbyu, kaya medyo naiilang ako. Pero masaya, masaya ang araw na ito.”

Giving back

For his first ABS-CBN project, Aga will host “Pinoy Boyband Superstar.”

“I like it,” said Aga. “It’s light, it’s different.”

He agreed to do the show as a way of “giving back” to fans who supported him through the ups and downs of his career.

“Kasi parang in a way, I’ll be mentoring kids who are just starting (their careers). Dadaanan nila ’yung dinaanan ko all those years ago so, parang it’s nice to share naman with them ang mga natutunan ko along the way somehow.”

How he will judge contenders on the show is altogether a different thing.

“It will get real as it gets,” Aga said. “The best way to critique people is being honest. So, I’ll be honest as I can.”

“Alam ko siyempre mga bata ’yan so ninerbiyos, kinakabahan but I want to go beyond that. Like, ’yung iba siyempre at the onset may dating na pero ’pag kumanta, kapag nagsalita, medyo kulang so, ’yun ang babantayan ko. Sino ’yung guy na parang feeling mo kapag binigyan mo ng konting panahon, oras, konting advice, mahihinog at gagaling talaga? ’Yun ang hanap ko.”

Doing the show is not work for Aga as “magaan siya.”

“Maluwag ang schedule at hindi ako masyado malalayo sa asawa at mga anak ko. I can still have a normal life. So, what else can you ask for?”

Aga admitted he had trepidation prior to accepting the job.

“I asked myself, ‘Am I up for it? Kaya ko pa ba?’ Then I told myself parang I’m too young to retire. I don’t mind, really, at this point, pero parang meron pa akong gustong gawin na hindi ko alam.”

He is thankful that in the show, he will be surrounded by the likes of Vice Ganda, Yeng Constantino and Sandara Park.

“Kasi mas lesser ang focus sa akin so, less pressure. I’m just happy.”

Movie in his mind

Beyond the show, Aga looks forward to doing movies again.

“Ang hilig ko talaga pelikula,” he said. “I admit I missed doing films.”

Is he in talks with Star Cinema?

“I’ve always been in touch naman with Star Cinema, with tita Malou (Santos) pero, honestly, hindi ko pa alam. Sana. They gave me a script today and I’m excited to come home and read it. Kapag naayos natin, then…”

One thing he made clear, “I’ve never lost my passion doing movies. Hindi mawawala ’yung passion ko for good films. Alam ng ABS-CBN ’yan, noon pa. Iba pa rin talaga ang paggawa ng pelikula.”
