The Binibining Pilipinas 2016 has recently closed its curtain, with Maria Mika Maxine Medina succeeding Pia Wurtzbach as being the new reigning Miss Universe Philippines.
As reported on GMA Network, the 25-year-old Quezon City beauty, who also won Miss Philippine-Airlines, beat other front-runners, including Kylie Versoza, who won Miss Philippine-International, and the new Miss Philippine-Globe – Nichole Marie Manalo, who previously attracted attention for being the younger sister of Miss Philippine-Universe 2009 Bianca Manalo and Miss Philippine-World, Katherine Anne Manalo.
In the interview portion of the pageant, Medina was asked what she would say to a teenager who wants to stop her studies, to which she answered, “I would tell the little girl to study hard no matter what the parents would tell her because having an education is something that cannot [be taken away by] anybody else. Education can make you an even better person.”
This is the first time Medina joined the pageant, unlike some of the previous winners. She was originally selected in the 2012 pageant, but withdrew her participation due to a conflict with her contract.
The night also marked the end of Pia Wurtzbach's reign as Miss Philippines. In her speech, she stated, “In the years I have appeared on this very same stage, my biggest realisation is that we should never give up on our dreams, we should never waiver in our perseverance, and never let obstacles hinder our progress. A dream is a picture of possibilities, and we should have a strong heart and a prepared mind to turn that into a reality.”
The 2016 Binibining Pilipinas coronation night was held on Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
