Palace suspends classes in NCR on Tuesday, March 20, 2018 due to ‘threats posed by some groups’

Malacañang suspended classes at all levels in Metro Manila for Tuesday, March 20, 2018 due to alleged threats posed by some groups.

“In view of actual and/or imminent threats posed by some groups, we are suspending classes at all levels in Metro Manila effective today, March 20, to safeguard the safety of students,” presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said in a statement.

For those outside Metro Manila, the Palace left the decision to suspend classes to local government units.

The Palace did not say the groups behind the supposed threats but Roque said President Rodrigo Duterte “has instructed that he will suspend classes even with the slightest threat of a strike to ensure the protection and well-being of students.”

Malacañang had also suspended classes in the capital region on Monday afternoon due to a strike led by transport group Pinagkaisang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Operators Nationwide (PISTON).

“We reiterate that the government remains steadfast to modernize our public utility vehicles and will not be bullied or held hostage by some transport groups,” Roque said.

Malacañang earlier said it may suspend classes at all levels for the rest of the week in Metro Manila if PISTON would continue the transport strike.

The transport group has said it is for modernization, but argued that it will put most drivers and operators into debt because of the P1.6 million required to replace their old units with new ones.

PISTON also slammed the class suspension, saying Roque was wrong in assuming that the group may hold a weeklong strike.

“Malacañang is trying to fan hatred laban sa mga drayber. Sa halip na harapin, kausapin at pakinggan ang karaingan ng mga drivers ay nag re-resort ang Malacañang sa fake news,” PISTON leader George San Mateo said in a message to reporters. — GMA News
