Pygmy sperm whale

A pygmy sperm whale (Kogia breviceps) was found dead by Joel Samillano of Brgy. Paliwan, Bugasong, Antique.

Pygmy sperm whale is unique among cetaceans in using a form of “ink” to evade predation in a manner similar to squid.

This species has a sac in the lower portion of their intestinal tract that contains up to 12 liters of dark reddish-brown fluid, which can be ejected to confuse or discourage potential predators. 🐳

Kagawad Frugelan Tonog and the residents reported the incident to the Office of Mr. Freddie P. Vista, Municipal Agriculturist and an investigation was conducted together with Aquaculturist I, Mrs. Jeane Villaruz Nietes, and MENRO Designate, Mr. Domingo B. Lavega.

As advised, the residents dug and buried the carcass of the said species.
