SSS, GSIS to upgrade digital sites

State-run Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) and Social Security System (SSS) have vowed to improve and strengthen their digital platforms in line with President Duterte’s directive to upgrade the delivery of frontline services.

In a report to Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez, GSIS and SSS said they have put in place information technology tools geared toward protecting their online systems from data breaches and other forms of cyberattacks.

The GSIS serves as the technical lead for the insurance cluster in putting up the shared cyberdefense project. The agency shifted to the online filing of loans and claims at the onset of the pandemic in 2020 to make sure that frontline functions are maintained.

The GSIS also launched the online annual pensioners information revalidation (APIR) last year to reduce the risk of contracting the virus. Instead of appearing onsite, pensioners may activate their status using digital channels like Zoom, Viber, Skype and Facebook.

The SSS, for its part, has moved its claims filing for retirement, unemployment benefit, sickness benefit, maternity benefit and funeral benefit to its online site.

Salary and calamity loan applications can also be completed in the SSS’ digital platform, along with the renewal of pension loans.

The online filing of loan applications proved to be beneficial for employees, as their applications are processed in real-time, the SSS said.

The registration of new SSS members to obtain an SS number can also be done online, with the option to upload the required supporting documents for those with unified multipurpose ID cards and email. Any changes in the member’s personal data can be made online as well.

Benefit claims under the SSS program are now disbursed through electronic wallets, cash pay outlets, PESONet and even the Union Bank of the Philippines QuickCard. The provident fund of private workers launched in 2018 its mobile app that can be accessed by members using their My.SSS account.

Dominguez had earlier ordered the social pension funds to enhance their cybersecurity program and improve their digital services to keep up with the challenges posed by the pandemic.
