Record-breakers get own incentive

Filipino Olympians who can’t bring home medals from the Tokyo Olympics but manage to establish new national records stand to receive cash incentives from the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).

PSC commissioner Ramon Fernandez said the incentives are good as approved although the board has yet to determine the amount.

It will be discussed when the PSC board chaired by William Ramirez convenes today.

Initially, reports said the incentive could reach P500,000 for each record set.

“The amount will be decided by the board tomorrow (today),” said Fernandez.

Eligible for the reward are lifter Elreen Ando, who broke the country’s mark in the 64kg of women’s weightlifting, and swimmer Luke Gebbie, who clocked 49.64 seconds in the 100-meter freestyle to erase the old mark of 49.94 he himself set in the 2019 FINA World Championships.
